My understanding is that US roadmaps, e.g., the sort they used to give out
for free in gas stations, that you now buy for $5-$10 in stores, are
always made with some obscure false datum in them - a spurious road or
town, etc. - for precisely the same reason.
Stealing of Internet-accessible databases for comercial reasons is now a
recognized crime. There's even a verb for it, though, perhaps because I
am old enough to remember free maps in filling stations, I can't remember
it ... strip-mining? There was an insance where a student-tours travel
agency sued a competitor for stealing the itinerary and pricing
information from their web site using a program specially written for the
purpose.
