Welsh i, u and y represent three different sounds, although in
some varieties "u" has merged with "i", and "y" is pronounced
"i" in some words, but normally "y" is like "a" in English
"ago"--and it is pronounced like that in the article (which is 
"y" before a consonant and "yr" before vowel or h+vowel).

Next, even if you pronounced "y" and "i" the same, and wrote "i",
you would find "ir" before words starting with a vowel, so "ir o..."
but no "i o..."
