VMs: New to this list, just some questions...

Hello!

Could someone please tell me, without going into too much detail, what the
general consensus on the origin, purpose and meaning of the VM anno 2005 is?
Is it still being researched by official institutes or is the mistery kept
alive by an Internet community? Are there any large scale events coming up
or plans to take a crack at this thing in the near future?

I find claims that it is a hoax and also that the code has already been
cracked

up with that?

There are a lot of sites and sources; I just want to put some things in the
right perspective before I start reading up on things etc. I understand I am
way behind everyone so I don't need detailed information just some info to
get a sense of what's current.
