Re: VMs: f1r UV...?

Hello Nick and all,

I absolutely agree, even some original "photostats", as Voynich called them, would be probably better than what we have today, unless they aged too. Let's not forget it is almost 100 years after his experiments. As far as I can judge, the scans show three kinds of misuse:
1) traces of liquid, probably solvent
2) some vapor (or other chemical) effects like discoloration
3) deliberate scratches, almost in parallel

Theffects of the ultraviolet light cannot be discounted but cannot be proven either.
As for those scratches, they might have been caused when somebody tried to erase the name the first time and he might have even use some liquid. Apparently very amateurish job.

As for chemical effects, I do not know what Voynich used, but so called "blueprint" picture - if his "photostat" was using similar method - is developed by ammonia vapor and as far as I remember from fifties, somewhere there was also the high voltage source for ultraviolet light, with ozone as a byproduct.

Needless to say, the fist copies would be able to show more and would be certainly very valuable. Also, I always wondered why Voynich used photostat, while the photography was already of very good quality in his time. But then again, he would never discover the hidden signature - or so he says.

Jan

P.S. Strangely, neither Marci nor Baresh mentioned the erased Horcizky's name - or any erasure, for that matter - but the scratches and liquid spot are still clearly visible, even without ultralight.
