I don't have time to contribute much here, but a frequent thought on the labels has been that they are numbers or ordinals of some kind, like 'Figure A', 'Figure B', etc. How would that fit in with your thinking? If you're going to work on the labels, that's certainly a hypothesis you should consider.

2) On second thought, is there a unix wizard on the list who can easily massage some work they have already done (such as to a list of labels they may possess, etc) to quickly and easily determine any of the following:

A long time ago, Karl Kluge transcribed all the labels. This is included, I believe, in Stolfi's interlinear. You could use Michael Winkelmann's Perl scripts to extract this.


As for the faces, there has been much speculation about the 'alchemical herbals', which could be related to the VMs. Philip Neal has material on these:
