VMs: Re: Stars vs. flowers, what does line/stem mean?
Just a quick question since the stars have come up. I have personally
wondered whether some of the things generally referred to are stars
versus flowers. Some certainly appear to be stars to me and are in an
astronomical context, but on many occasions including the last section,
many of these have a stem like line. The line doesn't seem to
designate motion like a shooting star, but looks like a stem sometimes
where a nymph or creature is connected to the star/flower. Sometimes
rather than a single stem line, there are a pair of strokes, and the
pair suggested a dimensionality that bothered me if the line was merely
a stroke to show some ideological connection of the subject to the
heavens. In the recipe section some have stems/lines which simply
terminate. The coloring of some of the star/flower center/faces also
has posed a tinge of doubt to me whether they sometimes flowers. I did
a quick search using google images at one point to see if I could find
similar images without success but of course google only can index
based on its rules for graphic names in pages or context as it can
surmise.
Is there a generally accepted symbology any one might point me to that
accounts for the line or stem in a star context? For instance an
example where there is a similar line which has been accepted as
showing the subject is connected to the heavens for instance, or
anything that would help explain how it could be used. If anyone has
looked into this or has other historical examples, it would help me
resolve a question that has been nagging at me and would let me cross
one more item off the to do list.
Thanks,
Wayne
