Hi Jeff
My thinking on a possible link between the VMs and the Maya is along the
lines of the Voynich author possibly having visited there in the early
16th century and been influenced by the sights he saw. If such were the
case, it would explain a few things I've noticed in the VMs:
1) The "Sky Band" borders we spoke of in the preceding message.
2) The extensive use in the Spanish glosses of several Aztec manuscripts
of the first "Big Red Weirdo" of VMs folio 1R. I detailed this in the
posting linked here.
http://www.voynich.net/Arch/2005/01/msg00022.html
Here's a link to folio 1v of the Codex Mendoza which has the symbol twice.
http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/world/images/s50p1.jpg
3) The forms of several of the plants, such as the sunflower and the pepper.
4) On folio 82R of the VMs, about 1/3 of the way down the center of the
page is a drawing of an object like a star but with several small circles
protruding from it. This bears a remarkable similarity to the symbol of an
Aztec sun god called Tonatiuh, especially the smaller forms used in the
manuscripts. This god is most well known as the face in the center of the
great Aztec Calender stone.
On a side note, I've seen pictures of the Calander Stone where
Tonatiuh is called the Prime Mover of the Universe. When I wrote my
paper charting the correspondances between the VMs and Dante's Divine
Comedy, I charted the starlike symbol on folio 82R as representing the
Prime Mover in a section of Dante's Commedy called the Discourse of
Statius (Purgatory--Canto XXV, line 70)
As you can see, I don't mind going out on a limb. The view is quite clear
out here.
Until later
