In a regular vertical column?  Weren't prickings used to premeasure line
heights in manuscript pages and then connected with lightly ruled lines or
something like that?  But I don't recall noticing any of these formalities
in the VMs.  In fact, the lines tend to stray up and down in ways that
show them to have been executed without guides other than previous lines.
