Has anyone read this paper that has been floating around social media lately?
Deciphering Undersegmented Ancient Scripts Using Phonetic Prior
From the title alone it seems like this paper would be about deciphering scripts, and that seems to be how most of the articles I have seen understand it. However, when I skim over the paper itself it seems like it is actually concerned with the problem of identifying cognates in the closest known language related to an unknown language given texts in a known script where word-breaks are scarce or absent.
So not really about the problem of deciphering scripts so much as the problem of translating an unidentified language.
Is that right, or have I missed something important about this paper?
