While I'm fairly sure that this will turn out to be the case, I'm not I 
could accept it as a *precondition* for any solution.

If, for example, the VMs turns out merely to be a cryptographic "proof of 
concept" (much like some of Trithemius' work, which encrypt nonsense 
plaintexts), the pictures might prove irrelevant. From what we know, this 
remains a significant possibility.
