Careful - if GC had ever had something like the kind of result you're 
claiming within his grasp, he would have persisted with it right to the 
bitter end. And all because of his love of pizza... :-)

While absence of evidence is not normally evidence of absence, I feel sure 
he would have mentioned something along the way if he had been that close. :-)
