Re: VMs: Stars or No Stars

Hi, Florin

Thanks for your response! Don't worry; I bark, but
rarely do I bite. Smile.

I wonder about the 29 Pisces nymphs, too. The Julian
(Old Style) calendar used a simple four-year cycle for
Leap Year, while the Gregorian (New Style) uses a more
intricate system of calculating the Leap Year days.

Perhaps there is information here that can help us
date the document. Hmmm. I wonder, is it a Leap Year
document, or is it just constructed to account for
Leap Year? Would that explain the extra notes?

Different parts of Europe converted to the New
Calendar on different dates. For example, the
Catholic countries changed their calendar in 1582, but
Bohemia changed over in 1584. Protestant Germany, on
the other hand, did not undergo the same calendar
shift until 1700.

If the 29 nymphs indicate 29 corresponding degrees for
each of the days of the Pisces month, this suggests a
correspondence (no doubt this has been discussed at
length) between the nymphs and days of the year rather
than a correspondence between the nymphs and the
degrees of the Sun, which is a more usual application
in astrology.

Your ideas raise another question: we are missing two
signs, so what is the count of the total number of
nymphs in the Zodiac illustrations?

On a couple of the "signs", the nymphs are hard to
count because of the creases in the pages. Does
anyone have a good nymph "head count?"

The Sun moves just a little faster than a degree a day
through the 360 degrees of the Zodiac, so we have 360
degrees in the Zodiac, while we have 365 (and 1/4, for
Leap Year) days in the year. Because of this
discrepancy, I would be surprised to find 365 nymphs,
so I am curious.

Warmly,

Pam
