In the past, when people were working with 
accuracies of the order of 10 arcminutes or worse,
latitude and longitude were used, since the 
latitude was invariable and longitude increased
linearly with time due to precession.
Nowadays, when accuracies are of the order
of milli-arcseconds (mas) this advantage no longer
exists, and catalogues use Right Ascension and
declination (already did before...)

The 1-arcminute accuracy was only achieved 
after the assumed origin of the Voynich MS.
