Re: VMs: Reasearching the VMs at Beinecke

Hi GC,

I was looking for this, at least subconsciously; however, nothing really stood out to the point where I would say that it was a bleed across from a missing folio. In fact, I was a bit surprised at the minimal amount of bleed-across that I actually saw, primarily occuring where there was an excess of paint gum (arabic?).

Another area that might be of value in future (in person) investigations of the manuscript is to look at the creases, foldings, and depressions in the vellum to aid in detecting what might have been lying next to what. Looking at the dirt (mold, oil, gutters) may also be of assistance. BTW is was surprised at how little gutter dirt existed, relegated only to a limited number of fold gutters. I seemed to be able to detect where clips might have been used to hold the vellum. There are also tracks (parallel lines, less than 1cm?) that suggest running a roller over the vellum. Towards the end of my examination of the manuscript, I was looking at one folio which seemed to have a "water mark" outline that I believe was due to something resting (probably for quite a while if true) on the vellum (kind of looked like a caldron). But this level of examination of the vellum would take a lot more time and effort that I currently have; perhaps I will include it on my items to look at on a return visit (if ever there may be one).

Dana, I do seem to remember in the herbal section that we have one or two "bleed across" images that do not match existing folios, which would suggest that there are herbal pages missing besides f12. Did you gain any sense of this in your examination?
