If terminal positions are more constrained, then the number of distinct endings should be smaller than the number of distinct beginnings across comparable samples.

Try this:
• Take any section of text
• List unique first 2-character combinations
• List unique last 2-character combinations
• Compare counts

If the system is uniform, these should be comparable.

If not, then variation is not evenly distributed across positions.
