Crossbows

Crossbow was invented in China first but not really in the form we are
familiar with it. Anyway a good book is called the Book of te Crossbow by
Ralph Payne-Gallwey
Dover publishes a copy of it.
ISBN 0486287203

The book says teh crossbow appeared in its earliest european form in the
Western Roman Empire in the 4th century. KIt has a lot of woodcuts of
crossbows from period sources. If someone forwards me a JPEG Of some of
the crossbows in the VMS I will attempt to date them according to this
book.
