VMS -- Botany (f42r)

>From what I can determine so far, it appears that the plant on the left
in f42r is Rumex acetosa and not Rumex scutatus (though I have seen one
web site with a great match for scutatus; however, the leaf at the
website might inaccurate). The smaller three leaved plant to the right
is probably also sorrel, though I haven't correctly identified it yet.
Problems that I run into when trying to identify plants include their
stages in growth, parts of the plant that may not be included in the
drawings, missing colors when using photocopies, haste on my part,
possible incorrect pairing of flowers and text on the internet websites,
etc. While there is certainly room for error and correction with the
recommendations that I am making, I do try to be as accurate as
possible. I even look to see which way the veins run on leaves when
present. I am certainly open to and encourage challenges; however, I
would expect that most discussions would be at the species and
subspecies levels.

Right Side Plant: (this is just to show the variety in sorrel; the leaf
edges are too smooth here for a good match with the drawing
in the VMS)
