Although that's true, I'm not sure how it's relevent to the question of
whether there was/is something interesting in the original shaft. As of
the book's publication in 1999, a syndicate was planning an ambitious new
dig a little to one side of where they believe the original pit to have
been. Since that was two years ago, they've presumably either made
considerable progress or given it up by now. I don't know the current
status.

The claim made in the book is that the Oak Island "money pit" was
constructed by the Scottish Sinclair family somehwat earlier than
that; they hid in it a treasure that had also been guarded at one time by
the Templars, although I don't think it's strictly accurate to say that
the secret society postulated in the book *was* the Templars... more like
a superset of them.
