FWIW, on Leonardo da Vinci's map of Imola I mentioned recently, he used the standard Northern Italian wind-rose of the time (according to whichever book I saw it in) for the 8 directions of the compass:-


        N       septantrione
        NE      grecho
        E       levante
        SE      sirocho
        S       mezzodi
        SW      libecco
        W       ponente
        NW      maesto

I made a note of these as I thought they might well form a good cryptographic crib. :-) Although there doesn't seem to be much correlation with the labels on the page you mention... you never know. :-)
