Starting Points II
To back off from my last statement, it was
"generally assumed" that the year started with
Aries. In Anthony Ascham's SacroBosco manuscript,
he breaks from the mold by beginning the year in
January. In his treatise on calendar reform, he
lists all the systems for beginnings of the day
and year, demonstrating his knowledge of the
unusual. This might explain why his work on
astronomy was somewhat unusual compared with
contemporary writings.
