Last week I found a great book on "Medieval scientific illustrations" in the
Royal Library. It shows all the strange constructs that authors used to
convey their models and systems. The "rota" is one of the common types
(among "tables", "trees", "diagrams of opposites" etc.). Immediately a lot
of strange illustrations I found in the art-books fell into place.
Unfortunately I only had 30 minutes and I couldn't take the book with me -
it's in the rare-manuscript bookshelves. For me it was a major "aha"
experience (if that term exists in English). There were even a lot of "ugly"
unpolished illustrations, more VMS-like than the usual
illustrated-manuscripts.
