VMs: More Fontana name trivia...

Giovanni Fontana also signed his name as "Johannes Fontana Venetus" or "Johannes Fontana de Venetiis" (IIRC). FYI, the two German monographs on him (that were in the Warburg) seem to spend most of their time assessing whether particular documents can be safely attributed to him (or refer to him) or not.

A quick Google search on "Johannes Fontana" throws up a Russian site which (my guess is) refers to Fontana's status as the father of the modern padlock. So add this to the list:

Johannes Fontana Padlock Historians :-)

Google also lists a (different) Johannes Fontana as having lived in Pancalieri in 1477: and, for completeness, the same one is also mentioned in a town document of 1442 (as Iohannes Fontana).
