VMs: Tracing...?

Hi everyone,

Looking at the star charts again reminded me that Sergio Toresella told me 
that, when he examined the VMS, he considered that many of the diagrammatic 
circles were definitely *not* drawn mechanically, but were instead *traced*.

How might tracing have been achieved in the 15th Century? Is the parchment 
of the VMS so thin as to make this possible simply by placing it over an 
existing document and (under a bright light) copying the lines? Might this 
have been the primary reason for preferring parchment to paper?

Certainly, this looks like quite a nice SCA exercise to try out. :-)

These are just random thoughts, of course - please feel free to 
assert/refute them as you wish. :-)
