Hm. That's a thought. But if it was recording a lunar eclipse, I would think
the Moon would be shown blacked out entirely, instead of specifically
in waning gibbous phase.

This may also depend on the mode of representation within the MS: note that there's a lot of use of colour, which may (or may not) have a specific meaning in a given context.

Make sure you have seen any particular page in colour before you make any absolute statements - sometimes the CopyFlo (and b&w scans) can give a misleading impression. :-o
