VMs: It's Origin and Purpose

At a New Year's party the other night, I was telling a friend
about the VMs, and he made a suggestion about it's origin
and purpose.  While I hope it's not correct, I feel it's still
worth bringing to the group's attention because it opens
another avenue of inquiry:

The VMs is a prop for a stage play.

I have a memory of reading about at least one play 
about Alchemists, dating to circa 1500's; I may have
the reference here somewhere.
