VMs: RE: Re. VMS Thumbnail images

I was sure Netscape 6.2 was at least compatible to the booklets... I know
early 4.76 is toast for them though.

Anyway, Progressive jpeg is similar to an interlaced gif in that it doesn't
load top to bottom - but rather takes up the space in advance and
progressively
comes in clearer. I find that the progressive images load much faster than
the
regular jpegs - even when dealing with 12-17K sized files. When I go to
Anthony's page - the 11r page loads top to bottom and takes about 5-7
seconds to
load; but when I go to the progressive one on my site it loads within 1
second (not cached).

I'll have to look into why NS 6.2 doesn't work with the booklets - I've had
a lot
of visitors that use 6.2 and they have obviously been through a few pages of
the booklets
so it seems to work for some and not for others... I'm not sure whether it
comes down
to an operating system thing with NS6.2 or not.

John.

Hello

'Fraid I don't know either. I just kept the images
small and well compressed so that they would
load promptly.

No, you're not :-)

All I can offer is that I'll willingly do the rough spade-work of
converting all the images I can find, like the sample ones
(these I took from the Beinecke online scans of their
transparencies) and doing my best as to file/folio naming,
for anyone who wants to do with as they please - host
them, mirror them, correct folio naming, or ignore them.
Might be of some use to someone anyway and it'll give
me something to do.

Unfortunately I couldn't make either of John's very interesting-
looking booklets work - clicking on the anchors doesn't
do anything. (Netscape 6.2.3 NT4sp3)
Expect I'm overlooking something glaringly obvious?

Regards

Anthony
