VMs: RE: RE: Re. VMS Thumbnail images
It's a wonder how times and attitudes change. Until very
recently, when I first publicly announced Takahashi's scans of the
Voynich, we were all very conservative in our approach to airing
images of the Voynich, always in deference to Beinecke and its
policies. In fact, I was probably one of the more liberal in
application, but now find myself somewhat on the conservative side
of this issue. Me a conservative? This simply cannot stand, or
else I will be doomed to a life of constant contradiction and
irrational justification!
As I've been reminded so many times in the past, we still need to
keep in mind that the VMS is a copyrighted manuscript. Getting
permission to use these images is like pulling rusty nails out of
ones feet - painful, careful, and arduous process. We still
aren't positive that Takahashi got the proper permission for his
layout.
Copyrights may be interpreted differently in Japan, but here in
the U.S. we must still be careful. Most of us have avoided
thumbnail images of the VMS because they may be interpreted as
unauthorized publication of the VMS images. I'm not quite sure
what has changed, but at the very least I would caution against
U.S. sites publishing or mirroring unmodified thumbnails of the
VMS. It just seems to me that if we're serious about getting
Beinecke to participate in current or future projects, we should
be somewhat conservative in our approach to web publication of
their copyrighted images.
A few months ago I had announced a page that offers an alternative
to this, displaying modified images that draw attention to the
page features themselves, without actually displaying the page.
An unfortunate accident in testing wiped out that page, (A
Microsoft glitch), but the images still remain for use, and I've
recreated a quire as demonstration. I really don't know if they
would stand in a court of law, but the "rough" nature of the
images serve as a mere respresentation or caricature of the page
image, and should by this definition be above any Beinecke
copyright claim. Links may be added to these images that access
an off-shore archive, such as Takahashi's image gallery, or one
maintained for this purpose.
I have just about all the herbal pages cleaned in this manner, and
a few of the non-herbal pages, many even in color. I willingly
make these available to any site that wishes to use them in place
of thumbnails of the actual images. Here's the sample link:
