I have just read "The island of lost maps" by Miles Harvey - a book I can
heartily recommend - and it writes about a modern-day map-thief, who visited
libraries and cut old maps out of atlases. This way he was able to provide
his patrons with unexpected precious specimens. He could practice this for
many years before he was caught in Baltimore.

I know it's rude to suggest a hypothesis like that, but there is some
superficial likeness in the two cases. I suppose that East-European and
Italian collections and libraries were not as well protected then as they
are now ...

And another point. Those curious details I pointed out about Mr. Voynich's
testament. Are these corroborated by other sources? Is anything more known
about the contents of his last will?
