Difficult to say, but I would think that early books and incunabula
were relatively much less expensive in those days, as compared
with the everyday prices and costs of living.

For example, Voynich's catalogue No.31 lists what is to my
eyes an extremely covetable Aristotle (Secreta secretorum)
of 1483 at 12 UK pounds! (It might well fetch many many
thousands today.) And I still wonder where he found such
vast quantities of these delectable books and manuscripts.
