Re: VMs: George of Trebizond...?

Hi everyone,

If you don't know who David Pingree is (I didn't, but certainly should have done):-

http://www.smoe.org/arcana/astrol3.html

[Research Sources For Astrology]

<...>

Pingree, David, "Astrology," in Philip P. Weiner, ed.,
Dictionary of the History of Ideas (NY: Charles Scribner's
	Sons, 1968) {"This is a short (8 p) article which expresses
the views of D. Pingree, a distinguished historian of
science, who has specialized in editing and translating
astrological texts of great importance. His views are
probably from outside of the astrological community,
but place astrological ideas in the context of their
contribution to the general history of western intellectual
development. It is as important as Tester for
understanding the contribution of the classical world to
present day astrological methods, and more important
for understanding the bridge to Arabic and Indian
Astrology." --Win Rowe. Pingree took Neugebauer's
and Sach's position at Brown University and is
	probably America's leading historian of astrology.}

So: if David Pingree says Trebizond was born at midnight 4/5 April 1436, I strongly suspect that (a) Pingree probably has been able to derive Trebizond's horoscope from subtle textual clues, and (b) he's probably managed to get it right. :-)

I now very much look forward to seeing Collecteana Trapezuntii for myself, which will almost certainly describe Trebizond's horoscope! :-)

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....

PS: if someone else gets there first, can they please post details to the list? [Phil - when will you next be in the BL?] :-)
