Absolutely fascinating.

Newbold interpreted the line by picking some words
from it:
michi dabas multas portas (you give me many gates)
which he interpreted as a sign of cabbalistic 
learning.
Now, 80 years later, we find out that he might
just as well have read:
michi no dabas multas portas
which, if you ask me, is exactly the opposite....
