So... WMV didn't donate them himself, but an (apparently anonymous) group 
of private benefactors bought the whole set from him and donated it (en 
masse) to the British Museum Library (later the British Library).

Hmmm... I wonder who was in that group... :-)

Still, I now understand why I was interested... it's because I couldn't 
quite imagine WMV in 1907 (or 1906, to be precise) buying a load of 
valuable books and then giving them away. :-o
