VMs: 'Zip' language detection

This week's New Scientist refers to a technique for language
detection using 'zip' compression.

Would this procedure be relevant to 'our' manuscript, or
do the expert members of this VMS list already know of, and
have already used, this sort of technique - perhaps under a
different name? (The technique, not the authorities)
