The use of diacritics was very changeable, depending not only
on the period - but also type of text and who wrote it.

I was especially fascinated with 1663 letter written
by a lady whose writing skills were not of quite high:

As I could not read a word of it, I wrote to the author of
the book from which these samples are taken and asked
him for a transcription. I intended to present it to the list
about a year ago but now cannot find the transcription 
he sent me then...
