I don't think the image is upside down. If you look at how the lines are
written,
It seems very much like they were written using a ruler with a very
precise spacing
or very carefully by hand, or lined paper of some form - how long ago
did A4 first appear ?? :)
Crucially, the words line up on the underside rather than the top. I'd
guess that
most languages including Javanese, are written base-aligned rather than
top-aligned.

Curiously, Philip Neal showed me a while back how the "starred paragraph" VMS section often appears to be top-aligned (though at the top of the gallows, rather than at the top of the letters).

What kind of culture the Qusus MS was brought into I don't know... is there any apparent dating that can be done for it, palaeography aside? Say, from the stylistics of the binding etc?

PS, when I joined up, I never realised just how much diverse stuff I
could learn from you guys. Cheers.

Yeah, you can pick up pretty much everything here (except how to read the VMS). ;-9

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....

PS: not a bad contribution from a wannabe Essex Boy! :-) But now I'll have to reorder my email filters yet again, bah! :-o
