No need for lotions. Venetian ladies used to sun-bleach their hair.
They would wear a crownless hat with a very wide brim, which left
their hair exposed to the bleaching effects of the sun, 
but their faces sheltered (a tanned complexion was out, 
an alabaster one in).

I cannot remember where I read that, alas: it was at least 30 years 
ago.
