RE: VMs: RE: word length counts - addendum
Yes, there are extensive word frequency counts that have been done on all
major languages. They're used for seeking cribs into text, etc. I'm in the
process of creating just such a list from an English herbal, and one from an
English astrological/prognostication, both 16th century. I have Macer in
Latin print that I can run through Omnipage and create a list for that
version as well. Having a frequency study of the words dealing with the
subject matter is most important.
I'd bet my bottom dollar that several of the 3-letter combinations map to
the word "the". The problem here is that 8am may mean "the" one time, but
something else the next. It's so popular as a stand-alone AND as a longer
word component that it is impossible for it to mean the same thing all of
the time and the text remain a communicator of thought in the form of
language.
These examples imply a changing system,(or systems).
