My chain of reasoning goes like this:
(1) you'd use a changing system to hide common strings like "the" and "and"
(2) the author appears to have made no attempt to hide dain daiin daiiin
...therefore...
(3) if there is a changing system, dain daiin daiiin probably functions 
outside it

That's why I'm comfortable with it being a separate (perhaps steganographic 
apothecary shorthand) system for recording quantities.
