VMs: A thought
Take two circles of card/paper. One is smaller than the other. The smaller
one goes behind. A hole is made through both. The smaller is glued to
something to make it stationary. 26 concentric circles (or any other number
for the characters of the particular alphabet) of symbols are written on the
inner circle. 26 squares are cut in the outer circle that move round one
position at a time and spiral inwards so the each square is on a different
row as it gets nearer the centre. To the side of each of these squares is
written a letter of the unencrypted alphabet (in any order.) At the
perimeter of this outer circle the letters are written around, one for each
row. Again in any order. A notch is cut at an arbitrary column. This notch
will be moved a number of turns either clockwise or anti-clockwise depending
upon the digit written to the cipher. The code will always start with this
notch in such a position that the outer square corresponds to a particular
cipher symbol. At this position the symbol for the first two characters of
the first word are found and the relevant cipher character written. This
first character could also be a digit as an offset before the character is
encrypted.
If the word has an odd number of characters when unencrypted then a shorter
word spacing is made to indicate
this.
I don't know if this would work on the VMS.
