This is, however, true about adaptations of the Latin
alphabet to other languages. What is usually referred to
in English as "accented characters" are often distinct
letters. For example "z" vs. "z-dotabove" in Polish and
"z-hacek" in Czech. They may appear in the same positions
in a word creating what is called "minimal pairs", ie.
a pair of different words which differ only in one letter
(phoneme). In Russian the Cyrillic alphabet has totally
different graphemes for the same phonemes.
