VMs: RE: Balneological section order ideas...?

Just one quick comment for now... the quire marking is on f84v which means
to me that f76r is the first page and f84 is the last.

Subject: VMs: Balneological section order ideas...?

Hi everyone,

Here are some observations relating to what the correct order of bifolios
in the balneological section should be. Firstly, the current order is:-

				[B1] f75
			[B2] f76
		[B3] f77
	[B4] f78
[B5] f79
[B5] f80
	[B4] f81
		[B3] f82
			[B2] f83
				[B1] f84

(1) f81r and f78v should almost certainly be side-by-side, as there are two
left-to-right water flows (across the central "gutter"!) between the two.
So: [B4] should probably be the centrefold of the quire, not [B5].

(2) f78r should face f84v (the pair of pineapple mayweeds should be
adjacent in the top centre). In fact, the two pages are (structurally) a
mirror image of each other - each has two pools with 7 and 8 nymphs in,
respectively. This would make [B1] the second-to-central bifolio in the
quire.

(3) I suspect that f77v should be next to f79r - the nymph on the right of
f77v looks to be in a mirror position across the gutter from a similar
nymph on the left of f79r. If correct, this would make [B3] and [B5]
neighbouring bifolios.

(4) My final guess is that the all-text page (f76r) was the first page of
the quire, which would make [B2] the outermost bifolio. It's just a hunch,
which I'm sure that other people will be able to prove or disprove more
constructively than I've done.

Put it all together, and my (current) predicted bifolio order for quire 13
is [B2], [B3], [B5], [B1], [B4] - ie:-

				[B2] f76
			[B1] f75
		[B5] f79
	[B3] f77
[B4] f78
[B4] f81
	[B3] f82
		[B5] f80
			[B1] f84
				[B2] f83

Comments? :-)

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....

PS: normally, I'd have printed these bifolios out and tried this by hand to
double-check the theory, but my printer has run out of ink. ;-(

PPS: is that a stone/brick floor I can see in the bottom-left corner of the
bottom-right bath on f78r?
