Perhaps the creator of the VMS was the first "big pharma"? Distrustful of 
letters patent (which are only short-lived, and dependent on continued 
patronage), it decided to place its intellectual property under 
cryptographic lock and key... before its code-maker unfortunately died of 
the plague (the licence on his bezoar stone must have run out), leaving the 
VMS. :-o

It may be rubbish, but it makes more sense than pointing a finger at the 
Cathars. :-)
