Could this be the author giving variant spellings or pronounciations of
a word? If I was writing a herbal page about daisies, I might well write

"The daisy is a common weed, also can also be known as Daysy, Dasyus,
Daisyus or daisus"

Ok so its not a great example, but as Holmes might say, when you've
ruled everything out, whatever's left, however improbable, must be the
solution.
