I think Barbara Barrett mentioned that in one of her posts, that the technique for making
large sheets of flat glass ("float glass") came later, but how flat would it have to be,
really? I think the point of using flat glass in today's light boxes is that the sheet has to
be in focus when it is photographed, but for the purposes of tracing, a little irregularity
might not be a problem.
Or, maybe they used a different substance, like another sheet of vellum or parchment, or horn
(like in hornbooks), something like that.
