VMs: f24r pair-transcribed...

Hi everyone,

I tried pair-transcribing an [ha] page, to see what differences I'd find (as I've done most of my pair-related studies to date on the biological/balneological section).

Immediate impressions: whereas the balneological section produces a regular rhythm of {e|ee|eee} endings, these are much more varied in f24r. In fact, in many of the places I'd expect to find an {e|ee}, I see a {ch|sh} instead. There are also more {eee} groups in f24r.

There are also more lone <q> characters in f24r, and (as has been noted many times) more struck-through gallows. The total absence of <dy> from the start of these lines was also a bit of a surprise to me (I expected perhaps one or two).

There are also some <oe> and <oee> groups in places where I'd expect to see {e|ee|eee} - my guess is that these probably code for other word-ending suffixes.

As I suspect <ch> codes for a [truncation] token, it's at first sight curious to see it at the start of the third word - how could that be? But bear in mind that this is about three quarters of the way along the top line of the page, which is often where Philip Neal expects to see curious key-like sequences. It may be that these are how individual page titles are encoded, and that the remaining letters on the top line are junk. I'm certainly suspicious about the first line of each page!

Finally: I'm undecided about how to pair-transcribe <od> - it's often written down as though it is a letter-pair, but as <-o> appears (occasionally) to be used as a word-suffix, and <d> is (apart from <dy>) used as a standalone letter, this could equally well be transcribed <o [newline] d> as <od>.

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
