VMs: Nabatea Botany

A while back Dan Gibson corresponded with me with great enthusiasm
concerning his matching of plant drawings in the VMS with those identified
in Nabatea. He was seeking my opinion on his observations and findings.
While I agree that there are certain general similarities, I would say that
my criteria for positive identification is a bit more stringent and would
not make the same comparisons. Identifying the botanical drawings in the VMS
takes a great deal of effort for me (around 8 hours on average per plant;
some plants take a lot longer than others). When I suggest a match it is
usually after a great deal of thought and consideration. I think that I
understand Dan's enthusiasm and appreciate his efforts, but I sense that his
observations and comparisons might have been based somewhat on "gut feeling"
and the novelty of the environment in which he found these plants.
