Now for a bit of trivia. Sacro Bosco of course means
Holywood. He originates from Halifax. I vaguely
remember having read that Halifax was called
Holywood before, but whenever I mentioned this
bit of trivia to my Yorkshire colleagues and
friends, I was met with sheer incredulity.
Anybody know for sure?

This article (by Malcolm Bull) asserts that Sacrobosco was born in Rastrick (south-east of Halifax, near the River Calder), though other encyclopaedia entries on him appear less certain. He lived and worked as an Augustinian monk in Holywood, Nithsdale, before becoming Professor of Mathematics in Paris.
