Yes, you are obviously right. But the default encoding
is UTF-8 (if you do not specify it in the declaration).
This is what I meant - support for UTF-8 plain text
would be perhaps most universal as practically all
modern editors (such as Word) can write to an UTF-8 text file.
The last time I checked WordPerfect had some problems
(I remember it treated long-s incorrectly) - but that was some 
two versions ago, so it may have improved.

Full support for XML would be too much, I think, unless
the transriptions are converted to XML as once discussed
(but decided against).
