Re: VMs: f78r viewed as columns...

My suspicion is that building Markov state machines to model each of the
VMS' (sub-)languages would be a good first step towards being able to
explicitly define what they are and how they differ. (Note that this
doesn't 100% overlap with "Voynichese words" - spaces are often
contentious and slippery things).
I think this is the method most likely to reveal something interesting.
I don't believe the Vm is actually 'encrypted', my personal feeling is that it
is 'encoded' in a language that the documentation is essentially lost, if it ever
existed.
Nonetheless, almost any human-derived language is going to have certain common
elements, structure and skeleton. (Aside: It would appear that some elements of
human language are instinctive, not just cultural, and are practically unavoidable.)
Assuming the Vm discusses some human topic, it may be possible to analyze out
structure and eventually even meaning, given a sufficiently large sample set, which
I believe we have.
One possibility with regard to the spacing -- since we're not sure what qualifies
as a 'space' and what is simply a large interletter gap, it would be interesting to
incorporate the inter-glyph spacing magnitude into the Markov table somehow. Say, have
a spacing rating in millimeters or something. Sieving this data into the statistics
might reveal order and meaning to the spacing that no human has yet intuited.
Disclaimer: This assumes it's not a big hoax, but I personally believe Occam's razor
would suggest that no one would bother putting this much work into a hoax, and do it
this successfully. Even if it is, a Markov statistical analysis of some sort ought to
reveal if the language has real grammar and structure. If it does, it can probably be
decoded. If it does not, it's probably the gibberish of a hoaxer.
