Jeff, 

I do agree that the fact that the underlying language
is old and words (some no longer used or with different
meanings) are spelled differently even throughout the
text is an added difficulty.  They can discourage one
away from correct patterns.  However, this could also
allow one some leeway in the proposed cleartext.  If we
ciphered most rap music today, 400 hundred years later
our counterparts would have difficulties understanding
the meaning even if they did solve the cipher.  And
then it would be a "eastcoast westcoast" thing. :)
